In 1970, the Postal Reorganization Act transformed the Post Office Department into the United States Postal Service. The “standing” eagle was adopted as the Postal Service’s official seal.
Eagles are powerful, stately, determined and undeniably American, which reflects the spirit of the Postal Service and its employees.
In 1993 the current “sonic” eagle was introduced as the new corporate logo to capture the ethos of a modern era which continues today.
Prior to the Postal Reorganization Act in 1970, the postal seal actually featured a horse and rider – a carryover from the earliest days of mail delivery by horse.
Prior to 1837, the postal seal featured Mercury, the Roman messenger of the gods.
After 240 years of service, the United States Postal Service now delivers more mail than any other post in the world. The Postal Service delivers to more than 154 million addresses in every state, city and town in the country. Everyone living in the United States and its territories has access to postal products and services and pays the same postage regardless of their location. This proud legacy continues to be symbolized by the forward look of an eagle.
