Postal Service Unveils Honorary Wonder Woman Stamps
Thousands gathered at this year’s New York Comic Con™, held at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. Of the many highly anticipated events and appearances that took place, the Postal Service’s™ October 7th First-Day-of-Issue dedication ceremony of the Wonder Woman stamp pane was perhaps the most talked about among comic book fans.
The 20-stamp pane celebrates Wonder Woman’s 75th anniversary and features four unique designs depicting the heroine during different eras of comic book history: Golden Age (1941–55), Silver Age (1956–72), Bronze Age (1973–86) and Modern Age (1987–present).
Fans, including actress Lynda Carter who played Wonder Woman on the 1970s series, took to social media to express their excitement about the stamp release. During the event and going forward the USPS® is encouraging fans to keep sharing the news by using the hashtags #WonderWomanForever and #WonderWoman75.
A Little Wonder Woman History
Wonder Woman debuted in All Star Comics in 1941, during a time when female super heroes were rare. Since then, she has become a cultural icon who has inspired generations of comic book fans.
Wonder Woman has also had several makeovers over the years, as her different looks through the eras reflect a change in both her storyline and in society. For instance, during the Golden Age she wore a knee-length skirt, but by the 1960s, her skirt had been replaced by a bodysuit and lasso.
While the Oct. 7 dedication received overwhelming and enthusiastic applause, this is not the first time Wonder Woman has appeared on a postage stamp. In 2006, she and other DC Super Heroes were honored on a collectible stamp sheet.
Although the 2006 stamps are no longer sold by the Postal Service, savvy collectors might find them through independent stamp dealers. You can also still purchase the Batman 75th Anniversary commemorative stamp sheet, which was released by the USPS in 2014.
The 2016 Wonder Woman stamps are available at Post Offices™ nationwide and on usps.com.
