Harnessing the Power of Transformation

A revitalized USPS is developing shipping products to make businesses of all sizes more competitive

The U.S. Postal Service is harnessing the power of its ongoing transformation to level the playing field in business shipping. Thanks to the creation of a modern, integrated, streamlined operation, we are creating shipping products that give businesses of all sizes quick and easy access to millions of potential consumers, reliably and affordably.

Our new competitive edge is rooted in a transformation plan that started a little more than four years ago. Under this plan, we are reshaping a legacy network fine-tuned to handle and deliver letters into a processing and distribution network positioned to become the most efficient package shipper in the nation. We are investing heavily in our facilities, upgrading them with the latest automation technology, and reimagining our entire processing and transportation model to get more mail and packages to more addresses faster and more reliably.

We’re still on this journey of transformation, but thanks to the investments already made, we are ready to shake up the package shipping landscape. For too many years, USPS ceded market share simply because we didn’t have the capacity or ability to compete. Duplication and repetition stymied our operations, especially in the time-sensitive shipping services that have supercharged the growth of e-commerce.

Those impediments are gone. Now, we have a new Postal Service focused from the top down to serve the needs of today’s businesses. At every point in our network, from the largest regional processing and distribution center to your community Post Office, we are developing products that deliver real value to business customers and the American consumer.

At the heart of that is next-day local and regional shipping. This is what consumers want and what businesses need, and we are developing exciting new products that will differentiate USPS in a crowded market. Our recently launched Priority Mail® Next Day is a prime example of where we are headed. Already available in 62 markets nationwide, this new regional shipping solution provides businesses with a negotiated service agreement a flexible, cost-effective and scalable overnight shipping option for packages weighing 20 pounds or less that reaches homes and businesses within 150 miles of designated USPS processing centers. This gives U.S. businesses market-breaking reach and great on-time performance that enhances the consumer’s experience, all at affordable overnight delivery rates.

We’re expanding our lineup, developing more products that will elevate next-day and same-day delivery, as well as return services for businesses of all sizes. Each will be specifically designed for market needs, but they will all share common characteristics. They will be affordable, reliable, fast and precise. Above all, they will all benefit from the Postal Service’s unparalleled network, reaching every address in the nation six or seven days a week through the Postal Service’s trusted and expansive delivery network.

This is why the $40 billion transformation of USPS was needed. Incremental adjustments were not enough; a comprehensive transformation was required in how we collect, process, distribute and deliver. And thanks to this fresh approach, the Postal Service can distinguish itself as the country’s shipper of choice, offering a holistic suite of solutions that levels the playing field for local and regional businesses and make them more competitive at a price that delivers value and supports our mission to be a financially sustainable, high-performing mailing and shipping service built for the 21st century.

Exciting developments are on the horizon! We’re crafting new products and shipping solutions designed to fuel your business growth. Stay tuned!
